Pragmatic. Shun is a very pragmatic man. This is in part due to his cultural upbringing; for all the ways that he fought against the system by joining the yakuza, the Japanese are generally more concerned with the good of the group rather than the individual. While not a pushover by any means, he is able to set aside his own personal wants and needs in order to achieve collective end goals. This is demonstrated aboard the Origin when Henri needs someone to hold Taylor in order to properly remove the top of his skull and get to the alien attached to his brain. Shun offers to do it when everyone else hesitates because he recognizes that they need answers as to what they're dealing with. Many of his decisions throughout the show are grounded in sensible self-preservation but are also practical choices for trying to help everyone stay alive.

While it can be one of his strengths, it is also one of his biggest weaknesses. He is practical to the point of it coming off as uncaring and hardheaded. He shows very little empathy and compassion towards others and especially those that he feels put him - and everyone else - in danger. When Baum and Logan attack Lee because they believe her to be the one infected among them, they are pushed to a different section of the ship away from everyone else. Shun ensures that they don't try to sneak back by threatening their lives before they leave. He fires once at them and then tells the men that if they try anything, they won't hear the shot next time. While Shun believes this was necessary to make a point and keep everyone safe, Lana instead sees it as being needlessly cruel.

Desire to grow. For all the terrible, unspeakable things that Shun has done throughout his life, he shows a genuine desire to improve himself. He tells Lana that he doesn't think people can just "become better" and appears to understand that it is something he will need to actively work towards. While Siren's offer at a blank slate is seen by several of the crew as the chance to immediately be a better or different person, Shun comes to recognize that he is still the person he was back on earth and no erasure on paper will change that. However, even when he backslides, he still manages to make progress towards developing himself into the person that he actually wants to be. For example, Shun gets angry at Lana for being unable to shoot Taylor who was trying to kill him. He tells her that she needs to be willing to do what it takes in order to survive. While he isn't wrong, he also fails to be sympathetic to the fact that murdering is not something most people can do easily even if it is to save someone else. Later, he apologizes to her when they have a moment to talk. He says that it "takes a real asshole" to be upset over someone not being able to kill a man. This shows that he is capable of reflecting on his words and actions and trying to learn from them and grow rather than remain the person he was before.

Anger issues. While, for the most part, Shun's anger is controlled and calculated, his temper sometimes gets the better of him. He is warned during his time on earth that his anger will burn him alive from the inside and leave him only a husk of himself. He needs to learn to let go and not allow it to consume him but that's, of course, much easier said than done. This is especially true when it comes to people he cares about or himself being put into harm's way. When he was younger, he ended up beating his brother Takeshi's bullies with a baseball bat. Aboard the Origin, he often lashes out at others for making mistakes that endanger his life or someone else's.

Closed-off. Even before his time on the Origin, Shun appeared to be a very closed off person. Shun especially keeps his under lock and key because of his yakuza affiliation. Emotions are a vulnerability that can be exploited and used against you easily. While on the Origin, he only smiles or outwardly displays a lapse in his guarded nature a couple of times throughout the nine days. He is capable of having fun - as shown by drinking with Abigail, Henri, and Rey when Lana and he come across their impromptu party - but even during that is fairly withdrawn. He doesn't dance with the others or do anything too embarrassing but does allow his walls to come down once in a while after getting to know people.
